How to Get a New Passport in Indonesia: Full Requirements and Tips for a Smooth Application

Planning an overseas vacation, studying abroad, or heading for Umrah? Before you pack your bags, make sure you fully understand the passport requirements so your application goes off without a hitch.

A passport is an official document that serves as both an identity card and a travel permit for Indonesian citizens traveling abroad. The good news? Applying for one has never been easier, thanks to the M-Paspor app, which lets you handle the entire process online.

That said, many people still find themselves confused about the required documents and steps involved. To help you navigate the process with confidence, here's everything you need to know about getting a new passport in Indonesia — plus tips to keep things running smoothly.

Types of Passports Available in Indonesia

Before diving into the requirements, it's important to know which type of passport suits your needs. The Directorate General of Immigration currently offers two options for Indonesian citizens:

  • Regular (Non-Electronic) Passport — 48 pages: This passport does not include an electronic chip. The fee is IDR 350,000 for a 5-year validity and IDR 650,000 for a 10-year validity.
  • Electronic Passport (E-Passport) — 48 pages: The e-passport comes with a chip that stores the holder's biometric data. Fees are IDR 650,000 for 5 years and IDR 950,000 for 10 years.

Passport Requirements for Adults

If you're 17 years old or above — or already married — you'll need to fill out an application form and submit the following documents:

  • A valid national ID card (KTP) or a letter of relocation abroad
  • Family registration card (Kartu Keluarga/KK)
  • Birth certificate, marriage certificate, diploma, or baptism certificate showing your full name, date and place of birth, and parents' names
  • Certificate of Indonesian citizenship (for former foreign nationals who have been naturalized)
  • Official name change certificate (if applicable)
  • Previous passport (if you've held one before)

Passport Requirements for Children

For children under 17 years old or those who are not yet married, additional documents from the parents are required. Here's what you'll need to prepare:

  • Both parents' KTP (national ID cards)
  • Family registration card (KK)
  • Child's birth certificate
  • Parents' passports
  • Parents' marriage certificate or marriage registration

During the interview at the immigration office, the child must be present and accompanied by one or both parents.

How to Replace a Lost or Damaged Passport

Passport replacement can be requested in several situations: when the passport is nearing or past its expiry date, has been lost, or has been damaged. Damage includes tearing, water damage, burning, or defacement that makes the information unreadable.

For passports lost or damaged due to force majeure — such as fire, riots, floods, earthquakes, or other officially declared natural disasters — the following additional documents are required:

  • A written request for passport replacement addressed to the head of the local immigration office, including personal details and the reason for the request
  • A statement letter issued by the local village office (kelurahan) or relevant authority confirming the force majeure event

For standard lost passport cases, you'll need:

  • A police report of the loss
  • Valid KTP
  • Family registration card (KK)
  • Birth certificate

Tips for a Smooth Passport Application

As an essential travel document, a passport is a must-have for any Indonesian citizen heading abroad — whether for tourism, religious pilgrimage, education, work, or official duties. It also serves as proof of Indonesian citizenship and is required for visa applications, residence permits, and other administrative processes.

Here are a few simple tips to make sure your application goes smoothly:

  • Bring both originals and photocopies of all required documents
  • Double-check your personal data on every document before submission
  • Arrive on time for your scheduled appointment
  • Use an active email address and valid phone number when registering on the M-Paspor app

Step-by-Step: How to Apply for a New Passport

You can apply for a new passport either online via the M-Paspor app or in person at the immigration office for special service categories. Here's how to apply through M-Paspor:

  1. Download the M-Paspor app from the Play Store or App Store
  2. Register an account using your NIK (national ID number) and active email
  3. Select "New Passport" and upload your required documents
  4. Choose your preferred immigration office and appointment date
  5. Complete payment using the PNBP billing code
  6. Attend your appointment for the photo and interview session
  7. Wait for your passport pick-up notification — it's typically ready within 4 business days

Walk-in applications at the immigration office are only available for special service categories, including toddlers, pregnant women, people with disabilities, and senior citizens aged 60 and above. All other applicants must go through the M-Paspor app.

Once your documents are verified, the passport issuance process includes:

  • Document verification and authenticity check
  • Payment of passport fees
  • Photo and fingerprint capture
  • Interview
  • Verification
  • Adjudication

Your new passport is typically ready within 4 business days after the photo and interview session. You'll receive a pick-up receipt and can either collect it in person or have it delivered via Pos Indonesia.

Need it faster? An express 1-day service is available for an additional fee of IDR 1,000,000.

Ready to Apply?

Now that you know exactly what to prepare, getting your passport should be a stress-free experience. Understanding the requirements and following each step carefully means there's no reason for delays — whether at registration or during the interview.

Beyond preparing your documents, don't forget to budget for both the passport fee and your upcoming travel plans.
