How to Perform Umrah Manasik for Beginners: A Complete Guide

Before performing the sacred pilgrimage of Umrah, it’s important to understand the proper manasik (preparation rituals) to ensure that every pillar and regulation is carried out correctly. It’s worth noting that Hajj and Umrah have different procedures, so their respective guides also differ according to Islamic teachings.

Each stage of manasik umrah carries deep meaning and must be understood by every pilgrim. To learn more about the complete steps and procedures, explore the full guide below.

What Is Manasik Umrah?

Manasik umrah refers to a series of activities or training sessions conducted to prepare pilgrims before performing Umrah in the Holy Land. The goal is to help pilgrims understand the proper procedures, pillars, prayers, and etiquettes during the pilgrimage.

The training usually includes both theoretical explanations and hands-on practice, such as how to perform ihram, tawaf, sa’i, and tahallul. Through this preparation, pilgrims are expected to carry out their Umrah properly and in accordance with Islamic guidance.

When Is Manasik Umrah Conducted?

The timing of manasik umrah is generally adjusted according to the pilgrims’ departure schedule. Typically, it is held 1–2 weeks before departure to ensure that the material remains fresh in the pilgrims’ minds.

The duration may vary depending on the organizer, but it usually lasts 4–8 hours, covering the entire Umrah process—from tawaf and sa’i simulations to Q&A sessions to clarify any confusion pilgrims might have.

The Stages of Umrah

Before departing for the Holy Land, pilgrims should understand the correct steps of Umrah in accordance with Islamic law. Here’s a breakdown of the main stages commonly taught during manasik:

1. Ihram (Intention and Ihram Clothing)

Ihram marks the beginning of the Umrah pilgrimage when pilgrims make their intention to perform Umrah at a designated miqat location.

After making the intention, pilgrims enter a state of purity and must avoid prohibited acts during ihram, such as using perfume or cutting nails.

Men are required to wear two unstitched white garments, while women must wear modest clothing that covers their bodies according to Islamic principles.

2. Tawaf (Circumambulating the Kaaba)

Tawaf is performed upon arrival at Masjid al-Haram by circling the Kaaba seven times counterclockwise, starting from the Hajar Aswad (Black Stone).

During tawaf, pilgrims are encouraged to recite prayers, remembrance (dzikr), and salawat to maintain spiritual focus.

3. Sa’i (Walking Between Safa and Marwah)

After tawaf, pilgrims perform sa’i, which involves walking briskly between Safa and Marwah hills seven times.

This ritual commemorates Hajar’s search for water for her son, Prophet Ismail, in the desert. During sa’i, pilgrims are encouraged to pray, engage in dzikr, and maintain orderliness.

4. Tahallul (Completion of Umrah)

Tahallul signifies the completion of the Umrah rituals. At this stage, pilgrims cut their hair as a symbol of purification.

Men are encouraged to shave their heads completely, while women cut a small portion from the ends of their hair.

After tahallul, pilgrims are considered free from ihram restrictions and may resume normal activities. This final stage symbolizes purity, renewal, and spiritual completion after fulfilling the Umrah pilgrimage.

What to Do During Manasik Umrah

Even with guidance from instructors or travel organizers, many pilgrims still make minor mistakes during manasik. These often happen due to lack of understanding, haste, or inattention during training.

Here are several things to keep in mind during manasik umrah:

  • Ensure your physical and mental condition is fit before attending manasik.

  • Stay focused during the session to fully understand each step.

  • Don’t hesitate to ask questions to the instructor if something is unclear.

  • Take notes on Umrah procedures and practice them at home to strengthen memory.

  • Record important details such as departure dates, miqat locations, and Umrah intentions.

  • Be aware of prohibitions that could invalidate your Umrah.

Understanding how manasik umrah works—from its meaning to its stages—will help you perform your pilgrimage with greater devotion and orderliness.
