What Is Badal Umrah? Intention, Requirements, and Procedure

Umrah and Hajj are forms of worship eagerly awaited by many Muslims around the world. However, not everyone has the opportunity to perform Umrah due to various reasons, such as physical limitations or advanced age.
This is where the concept of Badal Umrah comes in as a solution, allowing someone to perform Umrah on behalf of a family member or another person who is unable to go themselves. So, what exactly is Badal Umrah, and how is it performed? Let’s take a closer look!

What Is Badal Umrah?

Badal Umrah is the performance of Umrah by someone on behalf of another person who is unable to carry it out themselves. The term “Badal” means substitute or representative in Arabic.

Thus, Badal Umrah refers to replacing someone who cannot perform Umrah due to certain conditions, such as illness, old age, or even death.

From a legal standpoint, Badal Umrah is permissible in Islam. However, there are specific requirements that must be fulfilled to ensure its validity. One of these is that the person acting as the representative must have already performed Umrah for themselves. In addition, there are proper procedures to follow so the worship is conducted according to Islamic law.

Requirements for Badal Umrah

Before performing Badal Umrah, there are several conditions you need to understand. These requirements involve the person being represented, the representative, and other rules that must be met.

Here are the main requirements for Badal Umrah:

1. The Person Being Represented Cannot Travel on Their Own

The first condition is that the individual on whose behalf the Umrah is performed must be unable to go on their own. This may be due to illness preventing them from traveling to the Holy Land, advanced age, or even death.
In such cases, Badal Umrah can be done as a substitute for them.

2. The Representative Must Have Performed Umrah Before

The person acting as the representative (known as the wakil) must have already performed Umrah for themselves. This ensures that they fully understand the rituals and requirements of Umrah.
Badal Umrah is not merely a visit to the Kaaba, but an act of worship that must be carried out in accordance with Islamic guidelines.

3. The Representative Must Be in Good Health

The representative should be in good physical condition to ensure they can complete the rituals smoothly.
If they are unwell, the performance of Umrah could be disrupted or rendered invalid. Therefore, make sure the person undertaking Badal Umrah is healthy and capable of completing all the steps.

4. Permission from the Person Being Represented or Their Heirs

Badal Umrah must be carried out with the permission of the person being represented. If they have passed away, the representative should obtain consent from their heirs.
This approval may be given verbally or in writing, depending on the agreement between the representative and the heirs.

5. Performed with a Sincere Intention

Just like any other act of worship, Badal Umrah must be performed with sincerity for the sake of Allah. Intention is the most important part of every deed, and sincerity brings blessings to the worship.

How to Perform Badal Umrah

After understanding the requirements, you also need to know the proper procedure. These steps are essential to ensure the worship is valid and accepted by Allah.

Here are the stages of performing Badal Umrah:

1. Perform Sunnah Bath and Wear Ihram

Begin by performing a Sunnah bath to purify yourself. Then, the representative must put on the Ihram garments, the special clothing worn when entering the Miqat (the designated boundary for starting Umrah).
The Ihram should be worn properly in accordance with Islamic teachings: for men, it consists of two unstitched white cloths, while women wear modest, covering attire.

2. Make the Intention for Badal Umrah

After donning the Ihram, the next step is to recite the intention for Badal Umrah, mentioning the name of the person being represented. The recitation is as follows:

نَوَيْتُ العُمْرَةَ عَنْ فُلَانٍ وَأَحْرَمْتُ بِهاَ للهِ تَعَالَى
“Nawaitul ‘umrata ‘an fulanin wa ahramtu bihaa lillahi ta‘ala.”
Meaning: “I intend to perform Umrah on behalf of [name] and enter Ihram for Umrah for the sake of Allah, the Exalted.”

Another valid version is:

نَوَيْتُ العُمْرَةَ وَأَحْرَمْتُ بِهاَ للهِ تَعَالَى عَنْ فُلَانٍ
“Nawaitul ‘umrata wa ahramtu bihaa lillahi ta‘ala ‘an fulan [mention the person’s name].”
Meaning: “I intend Umrah and enter Ihram for the sake of Allah on behalf of [name].”

3. Begin Umrah from the Miqat

Once the intention has been recited, proceed to the Miqat—the point where Umrah officially begins. From there, the representative performs the rituals: tawaf (circling the Kaaba), sa’i (walking between Safa and Marwah), and tahallul (cutting the hair) as part of the valid Umrah process.

4. Complete All Pillars and Obligatory Acts of Umrah

All the pillars (rukun) and obligatory acts (wajib) of Umrah must be observed properly. The pillars include intention, tawaf, sa’i, and tahallul, while the obligatory acts involve avoiding certain prohibitions during Ihram. Following these ensures that the worship is valid and accepted by Allah SWT.

5. Supplication and Reliance on Allah

During every act of worship, it is highly recommended to make supplications and place trust in Allah. Prayers can be offered for oneself, for the person represented, and for all Muslims. Through sincere prayers, the Umrah performed may bring abundant blessings and great rewards.
